On October 31, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Diwali with Indian soldiers near the Indo-Pak border in Kachchh, Gujarat. Dressed in a Border Security Force (BSF) uniform, he visited Lakki Nala in the Sir Creek area, where he distributed sweets to members of the BSF, Army, Navy, and Air Force.
In his address to the soldiers, PM Modi emphasized that his government would not compromise on even an inch of India’s territory. “There is such a government in this country which would not compromise on even an inch of the country’s land,” he stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to national integrity.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of modernizing India’s military forces. “We are equipping our armies and security forces with modern resources,” he said, adding that self-reliance in the defense sector is the foundation of these efforts. He announced that the government’s top priority is to develop infrastructure in border areas, alongside the establishment of an Integrated Theatre Command for enhanced military coordination.
Focus on Defense Modernization
PM Modi pointed out that India is progressing toward establishing a unified military command structure, with plans for a Northern Theatre Command focusing on China and a Western Theatre Command centered on Pakistan. If implemented, these reforms will represent the most significant military transformation in India since independence.
He also noted the advancements in India’s defense capabilities, mentioning that the country is now manufacturing its own submarines and has developed the Tejas fighter jet, previously reliant on importing military equipment. “Today, India is exporting defense equipment to many countries of the world,” he added.
Sir Creek: A Critical Border Area
Lucky Nala, where PM Modi celebrated Diwali, is part of the Sir Creek channel, a strategically important area plagued by challenges in patrolling due to its marshy terrain. This border region is monitored by the BSF, which works to prevent drug smuggling and terrorist infiltration from Pakistan.
The Sir Creek spans 96 kilometers and has been a point of contention between India and Pakistan for decades. The BSF’s Crocodile Commandos maintain a strict watch over this sensitive area to safeguard national security.
A Tradition of Celebration
Since taking office in 2014, Prime Minister Modi has made it a tradition to celebrate Diwali with Indian soldiers stationed at border posts, demonstrating his commitment to honoring their service and dedication to the nation.
