Radhika Apte Highlights Pregnancy Bias in Bollywood

Actress Radhika Apte recently spoke out about facing discrimination in Bollywood after revealing her pregnancy. During the Freedom to Feed campaign by Neha Dhupia, which supports maternal rights, Apte shared her challenging experience of working through her first trimester in the Indian film industry.

Lack of Support from Indian Production Team

Apte revealed that after announcing her pregnancy, she encountered a lack of empathy from an Indian production team. She described how the producer was unhappy and she was expected to wear tight clothes despite feeling bloated, hungry, and in pain. Apte was even denied permission to visit a doctor when she felt unwell on set. This attitude reflected a deep bias against pregnant women in the industry.

Contrast with Hollywood’s Empathy

In sharp contrast, Apte praised a Hollywood filmmaker she worked with during the same period. Upon learning about her pregnancy, he responded with understanding, telling her, “That’s fine, you’re pregnant.” This simple reassurance made a big difference to Apte and highlighted the gap between Indian and international film industries in supporting working mothers.

Call for Kindness and Inclusion in Bollywood

Apte emphasized that she does not seek special treatment, only empathy and kindness. She stated, “I have always fulfilled my professional commitments, but a little compassion can go a long way.” Her experience sheds light on the urgent need for Bollywood to create inclusive, supportive work environments for pregnant women and working mothers.

Growing Demand for Change

Her testimony adds to the rising voices calling for reforms in the Indian entertainment industry. Outdated views must give way to humane practices that respect and accommodate maternal needs, ensuring no woman faces discrimination during pregnancy.
