Nagaland’s 62nd Statehood Day celebrations were overshadowed by accessibility issues, leaving the state’s Disability Commissioner, Diethono Nakhro, unable to participate despite being officially invited.

The event, held at the Secretariat Plaza in Kohima, highlighted the ongoing challenges that persons with disabilities (PwDs) face in accessing public spaces and events. Nakhro, a well-known advocate for disability rights, expressed frustration over the lack of adequate provisions for PwDs, despite the government’s promises of inclusivity.

Lack of Accessibility at Statehood Day Event

Nakhro shared her experience of being unable to access the designated seating area for senior government officials and department heads. When she raised the issue with officials, she was advised to sit behind the performers, making it impossible for her to view the event. She questioned the purpose of attending if she could not engage with the proceedings.

She emphasized that accessibility goes beyond just entering a building; it includes ensuring PwDs can access all areas, including critical spaces like the podium. Despite continuous awareness campaigns with various government departments, Nakhro pointed out that significant barriers remain, preventing PwDs from fully participating in public life.

Criticism of Delays in Accessibility Improvements

Nakhro criticized the delayed changes in providing necessary accessibility features, stressing that accessibility should be considered a fundamental facility, not an afterthought. She pointed out that if, as the Disability Commissioner, she faced such barriers, the situation for the broader disabled population would be even worse.

Concerns at Hornbill Festival

In addition to the Statehood Day event, Nakhro raised concerns about the accessibility provisions at the Hornbill Festival. Although there were some improvements, such as the installation of accessible toilets, these facilities were often placed in inconvenient locations, further hindering PwDs’ participation. She plans to inspect the festival venue as the state prepares for Disability Day on December 3.

Hope for a More Inclusive Future

Despite these setbacks, Nakhro remained hopeful, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness and continuing collaboration with the government to create a more inclusive society. She also highlighted the significance of addressing accessibility issues as Nagaland works towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Conclusion

The lack of proper accessibility provisions at Nagaland’s Statehood Day celebrations and other events underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the disabled community. Nakhro’s efforts to raise awareness are crucial in pushing for more inclusive practices, not only for government events but across all public spaces in the state.
