Former US President Donald Trump has confirmed that imposing 50% tariffs on India over its purchase of Russian oil strained relations between the two countries. The move triggered outrage in India and increased anti-US sentiment.
50% Tariffs on India Explained
Trump explained in a Fox News interview that India had been a major buyer of Russian oil, which prompted the US to impose tariffs of up to 50% on some Indian exports.
“India was their biggest customer. I put a 50% tariff because they’re buying oil from Russia. That’s not an easy decision,” Trump said.
The tariffs initially began at 25% but doubled to 50% from August 27, 2025, as the US sought to discourage India from increasing its Russian oil imports, under Western sanctions related to the Ukraine conflict.
Impact on US-India Relations
Trump acknowledged that the tariffs caused a diplomatic rift:
“That’s a big deal. And it causes tension with India,” he stated.
Bilateral trade between the US and India is valued at over $190 billion annually. Past negotiations to reduce tariffs had stalled, as India resisted opening its agriculture and dairy sectors to the US.
Diplomatic Efforts and Negotiations
Despite the friction, Trump’s administration continues talks to address trade barriers. He indicated plans to speak with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restore relations.
Sergio Gor, nominated by Trump as US ambassador to India and special envoy for South Asia, described the tariffs as a “minor setback” and expressed optimism that India’s commerce minister visiting Washington next week would bring progress.
“We hold our friends to different standards. Our priority is to align India with our interests, not away from us,” Gor said.
Trump on Russia and Ukraine
Trump also commented on Russia’s war in Ukraine, stating that his patience with President Vladimir Putin was “running out fast.” He emphasized that sanctions on banks and oil, in coordination with European allies, remain a potential tool to pressure Russia.
“We’ve had a good relationship with Putin, but the war must end. We’ll have to act very strongly,” Trump added.
