Positive Momentum in India-US Trade Talks
The United States has indicated that a long-awaited trade agreement with India could be finalized before the end of 2025. Officials described the latest round of discussions as showing “encouraging progress”, signaling strong momentum in negotiations.
The talks follow a shift from the earlier confrontational stance of the Donald Trump administration over India’s Russian oil imports, creating a more constructive environment for trade discussions, according to news agency ANI.
Two Key Issues in Focus
A senior US official explained that negotiations are centered on two parallel issues:
-
Reciprocal Trade Negotiations
These talks aim to balance tariffs and expand market access between both countries. Key topics include:-
Duties on American agricultural and industrial goods
-
Restoration of trade preferences for India
-
Greater access for Indian services professionals in the US
-
-
Russian Oil Purchases
India’s import of Russian oil has been a point of tension. New Delhi has maintained that its energy sourcing decisions are driven by national interests and the need to protect domestic consumers. Recent discussions indicate market improvements on this front.
Encouraging Progress Ahead
The official noted that while there is still work to be done, the talks are moving at an encouraging pace and could yield tangible results by year-end.
“I’d like to say we can relax, but there’s still a lot to do. Nevertheless, we have seen a lot of positive developments, and more progress is expected before the end of the year,” the official said.
India-US Trade at $190 Billion
Bilateral trade between India and the United States reached approximately USD 190 billion in 2024, with both nations aiming to significantly increase commerce and investment in the coming years.
